The marriage requirements for the UK can be quite tough and demanding depending on your situation. If you’re an American, Canadian, or any other foreign national getting married in London or the UK then it might be worth having the legal ceremony in your home country followed by a blessing with friends and family in the UK. You can have your blessing in a church or listed venue (see Church of England and Roman Catholic requirements for church weddings and marriage requirements for a civil ceremony). The blessing is fairly transparent in terms of wording and format, so very few guests will be able to notice that you’re already “legally married”. The blessing usually involves traditional wedding music, a reading, a hymn, and a prayer, but there’s lots of wiggle room to tailor it to your own liking. It’s not legally binding but you can still exchange rings and a kiss as you would in a binding ceremony.
Meeting marriage requirements can get tricky when partners are from different countries but for the American/American couple the blessing works beautifully. Happy planning and as always, we’re just an email or phone call away.
